Interventions that focus on self-monitoring, goal setting, and motivation can improve oral reading fluency.

We recently talked about the importance of oral reading fluency (ORF) and effective interventions like repeated readings in our review of this meta-analysis. But what wasn’t mentioned are things like self-monitoring and goal setting. We know that these self-determination skills as well as student motivation are really important for academic achievement in general. But, if targeted directly, could they also improve a struggling reader’s ORF? All signs from this recent study point to YES. 

 

A group of diverse 3rd graders identified as struggling readers received the intervention “Data Mountain” (because, you know, when we plot data on a graph, it creates little peaks and valleys…). The program included 3 key components…
