COVID-19 and Cognition: Impact for the Medical SLP

We summarize the emerging research on COVID-19 and the nervous system for medical SLPs on the front lines.

We’re sure you’ve seen no shortage of confusing and frankly dizzying news updates on COVID-19. It’s hard to keep up! While information is changing daily and there’s still a lot we don’t know, studies and cases are emerging that suggest some type of association between neurological symptoms and COVID-19Symptoms like headache, stiff neck, and loss of taste and smell raise suspicion of central nervous system involvement, especially when considering what we know about other related viruses. Andrespiratory failure in patients with COVID-19 could possibly mean the virus entered the brainstem through synaptic connections between it and the lungs.
