Articulatory placement training can improve phonemic awareness skills in preschoolers.

Teaching articulatory placement is typically reserved for kids with speech sound disorders. But with such a strong connection between articulation and phonemic awareness, why not extend this sort of instruction to all children? Becker et al. found that including articulatory placement instruction with traditional phonemic awareness tasks can improve phonemic segmentation and word/nonword reading in 4-year old preschoolers. And which professionals are specifically trained in the nuances of articulatory placement? That’s right, it’s us!
